My book

Urban Adventure Chicago-Google Books Cover.png

I researched and wrote a pioneering 518-page guidebook to help city dwellers get their outdoor fix in the concrete jungle, covering where to go and who to know in 20 outdoor sports from sea kayaking and rock climbing to caving and mountain biking. My short features tell the stories of area outdoor addicts and the places they haunt. The book generated coverage by the local NPR affiliate and major Chicago newspapers.

I edited journal articles for clarity and flow, as well as contributed fact-checking in areas for Georgetown University’s Edunomics Lab.

Case studies & reports

  • I work closely with clients on every project, from scoping a project to working with a designer to delivering a final draft, to make sure the end product achieves their goal.

  • I write and edit everything from executive summaries to entire reports.

  • I conduct research, interviews, and fact-checking as needed to complete the project.

Drawing on a 43-page Urban Freight Lab research report and interviews with researchers and Seattle Public Utilities, I drafted an accessible five-page brief on the logistical challenges of keeping edible food out of the waste stream.
When the People Are the Content.png
I told the story of a Center for Educational Leadership-led initiative to help principals be effective instructional leaders for this 24-page case study and toolkit, interviewing a dozen-plus education leaders and synthesizing center documentation.
Interstate Financial Reporting-Edunomics Lab.png
I did a developmental edit on an Edunomics Lab brief involving restructuring, rewriting, and suggesting added content to explain the complex story of then-missing data in education.
Mapping the Challenges to Sustainable Urban Freight-UW Urban Freight Lab.png
I built off Urban Freight Lab researchers' PowerPoint to draft a clear, coherent narrative report on planning for sustainable freight and the challenges companies and cities face in this arena.

A major U.S. charitable foundation tapped me for several rewrite and from-scratch writing projects, including:

  • Turning a 200-page evaluation with quantitative and qualitative analysis into a 32-page case study for maximum impact on international policymakers and program leaders.

  • Structuring, reporting, and writing an e-handbook.

  • Restructuring, rewriting, and de-jargoning four case studies for readability and sharpened takeaways.

The federally funded Regional Education Laboratory West at WestEd hired me to draft and edit half a dozen research briefs.
